Confucius said, ”Committed to the Way, based our acts on virtue, followed the path of benevolence,
and journey in art”. What we learn in the GuZheng class is not only the art of Guzheng,
but also an inheritance of traditional Chinese culture. Art emphasizes the unity of form and
content, and traditional Chinese art regards the appropriate style as the highest state of aesthetics.
Guzheng art is the ultimate pursuit of style in areas of techniques, qi (breathing) and charm.
Technical demeanor originates from sound, qi demeanor originates from the human (breathing),
and charm originates from the heart (mind). The essence of string instruments is the aesthetic thought
of the instrument in hand, with sound expressing emotion, affection flowing from the heart,
and musical message carried beyond the strings. These are the principles followed in my teaching.
Since ancient times, music has been used to cultivate temperament and to build a perfect inner
personality. GuZheng music not only absorbs the essence of Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist wisdom,
but also draws from Western civilization, thereby becoming an excellent vehicle for the integration of
Chinese and Western cultures. Our Guzheng class shall be a most meaningful hands-on practice of
Chinese traditional culture, while the student can be enlightened at the same time.
